For my boyfriend’s birthday we wanted to go somewhere cozy, casual, and close so we decided to go to Proof Pizza and Pasta located in the heart of Wynwood. The place -that seems to have been a house- is very well renovated and has a lovely rustic terrace that gives a sort of Italian vibe.
The menu is simple and to the point. I like that, not many options but all seem good and makes it easy to choose. Their wine menu is bit richer, with a good selection of Italian and some Californian wines, and also many artisanal beers. We decided for the exquisite Villa di Geggiano Chianti Classico. We thought this might go well with our food as we were not having any meat based dishes.
For appetizers we chose the fig and prosciutto, and the octopus on a bed of corn. The mixture of fig and prosciutto was very pleasant, the sweetness of the fig and the saltiness of the prosciutto blended well, and the plate was beautifully decorated. The octopus was also surprisingly very tender -I say surprisingly because it is hard to find good quality and fresh seafood, – so this was a nice treat, however I wasn’t convinced about pairing it with corn. My boyfriend however liked this appetizer better so I guess it’s just about personal taste.
For entrees we chose the white pizza with mozzarella, ricotta and parmesan; and the ravioli with corn, brown butter, oyster mushrooms and thyme. No complaints here. The pizza dough was thin, fresh, and tasty, and overall wasn’t too heavy as I had imagined. The ravioli were a dream, this time the corn somehow went perfectly with the ravioli and the mushrooms- it was very light and tasteful.
Overall the meal was fantastic, and I have to say the service was very good too. The kitchen did not take too long, -an average of 15 min to get our plates, – and were very courteous. But no celebration would be finalized without a cake, so I got a custom Oreo cake from Buttercream Cupcakes & Coffee in Coral Gables with a Water polo theme (he plays water polo), which was absolutely delicious! Happy Birthday Pau!
